The organization is headquartered in Moshi district Kilimanjaro region and was founded by 5 members..

Rural Health Access Initiatives (RHAI) was founded by Dr. William Kisima, whose personal story fueled his mission to transform healthcare in rural communities. Dr. Kisima was born and raised in a remote village Majengo Village in Moshi District where access to basic healthcare was almost non-existent.

When he was 5 years old, his mother fell seriously ill with Martenal complications a condition that could have been easily treated with proper medical care. With no nearby healthcare facilities, his family had to rely on traditional remedies and the help of an untrained local healer. Despite their efforts, his mother’s condition deteriorated. She passed away in his father and other relatives in  arms after days of suffering in 1999, a moment that would haunt him forever.

The loss of his mother was a turning point in young William’s life. He realized that her death could have been prevented if there had been access to proper medical care. From that moment, he made a vow to dedicate his life to ensuring that no other family in his village — or any rural area — would have to experience such a loss due to a lack of healthcare services.

After becoming a doctor, Dr. Kisima choose to return to the rural areas rather than work in a lucrative urban hospital. He saw the disparity firsthand — modern facilities in the cities contrasted sharply with the severe lack of resources in the villages. Determined to make a difference, he founded Rural Health Access Initiatives (RHAI) with a mission to provide accessible, quality healthcare to the most underserved communities.

He began traveling to remote areas with other four members, offering medical services, health education, and training to local health workers. His story of personal loss and his unwavering dedication soon drew attention, gaining the support of other healthcare professionals, volunteers, and donors who shared his vision.

Today, RHAI continues to grow, driven by Dr. Kisima’s dream of a world where no one is denied the care they need simply because of where they live. The organization stands as a living tribute to his mother’s memory and a beacon of hope for thousands in rural communities.
